Make the most of Knoxville, TN during the cold winter months, by enjoying winter and staying healthy too!. There’s plenty to do and see among the wintery scenery in the great outdoors of Knoxville.
First, the Dodge Alum Cave Icicles have become a very popular tourist attraction. Hike the trail up to Arch Rock. When you reach the cave at the top, you’ll notice long icicles that cling to the roof of the Alum Cave and form glittery ribbons. If you want to keep going, you’ll reach the summit of LeConte. One of the most picturesque mountains in the park, covered in snow.
In the morning, go on a hunt for Hoarfrost along the Appalachian Trail. An old English word referring to the white hair earned by aging, Hoarfrost builds upon long strands of grass or sticks on winter nights when conditions are perfect. Like dew, Hoarfrost is created when the temperatures go down at night and the moisture in the air condenses, creating long, delicate spindles of ice. Such a beautiful sight when the light shines perfectly on them!
Another popular winter activity is taking a trip to Peachtree Trace’s snowy Cemetery. Here, winter hikers will discover trails leading to a historic mausoleum acting as the ultimate destination of Meadow Factory miners and a large rock overlooking glimpses of Mead’s Colliery Reservoir. You’ll enjoy the Appalachian Foothills in Knoxville surrounding Mead’s Foundry. You’ll be exposed to spectacular views of the lake’s shades of blue, even against an adjacent covering or snow if you decide to hike the trek after a nice snowstorm.
